MONTGOMERY COUNTY, AL (WSFA) -

A Prattville man is facing charges for allegedly shooting and killing a cow and her unborn calf.

According to Capt. Trent Beaudry with the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, Byron Jamar Esco, 29, is charged with killing or disabling livestock and receiving stolen property fourth degree.

Beaudry says on Thursday around 12 p.m., Esco was observed driving in the Hopehull area with a female passenger. Neighbors told deputies they witnessed Esco pull over the vehicle, exit it and then shoot at a black and white cow.

The owner of the cow, after hearing the gunshots, came outside and witnessed Esco fleeing the scene. Beaudry says the owner of the cow was able to provide deputies with a description of the vehicle.

About an hour later, deputies spotted the vehicle and took Esco and the female passenger into custody.

While in custody deputies recovered a 9mm handgun from Esco’s possession. The gun was found to have been stolen out of Houston County, Beaudry indicated.

According to the owner of the cow, the cow was pregnant at the time of the shooting and was valued around $1,600.

Esco was taken to the Montgomery County Detention Facility under a $3,600 bond.

The female passenger, identified as Brittney Betterton, was charged with possession/receiving a controlled substance. She was taken to the Montgomery County Detention Facility under a $2,000 bond.
