A setback involving cornerback Delvin Breaux's recovery from a fractured fibula will keep the New Orleanian on Injured Reserve for the remainder of the 2017 season, according to Saints head coach Sean Payton.

Breaux returned to practice before the Packers game in mid-October and was eligible to make his season debut in Week 9 against the Buccaneers but never did and Thursday, Payton explained the decision "It's still not 100 percent, but it is going well and all the indications we have when we do the scans and the testing show it healing properly."

League rules allow teams to designate players to return from the injured reserve but the deadline to do so came and went for Breaux, meaning the end of his third season with the team, before it ever started.

After Breaux missed time during training camp with what was initially diagnosed as a bruise, reports surfaced that the team was looking to trade him away but after Breaux sought a second opinion on his leg, the diagnosis was changed to a fractured fibula and he underwent surgery in mid-August. He told reporters on October 30th "I'm catching up now, last week like I said, I went full practice last week. Like I told coach it's more cardio and trying to get into game shape but like I said, it's whatever they want to do from there as far as game reps and stuff like that, we'll get it done then."

The McDonogh 35 graduate is set to become an unrestricted free agent this offseason. Through three years with the Saints, he has played in 22 games, hauling in 3 interceptions and defensing 20 passes.
