BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -

Next Monday marks the 16th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks.

More than 2,700 people lost their lives in that attack. Over 400 of those victims were first responders.

Sixteen years after the collapse of the Twin Towers, the New Orleans 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb pays tribute to the 343 firefighters, 60 law enforcement officers, and 8 emergency medical service technicians that made the ultimate sacrifice with their lives.

This is the second annual event.

This Saturday, firefighters from 10 states and two countries will come to New Orleans to climb 110 floors, the height of the former World Trade Center Twin Towers. Each climber will wear full firefighting gear and a lanyard with the name of a first responder that perished at Ground Zero. Participants will climb 400 Poydras Tower.

About 30 firefighters from the St. George Fire Department will participate in the memorial climb.

Last year there were 287 participants. This year, 411 people have registered to be climbers. 115 people have registered as volunteers.

Following the climb, there will be an annual Brotherhood Bash in Lafayette Square. This year, the organization is introducing the inaugural “Battle of the Badges Cook-Off”, where fire, police and EMS will cook and serve their best dish to see who will be crowned the Champion and bragging rights for a year.

“More than 30 Memorial Stair Climbs occur every year across the country, and I wanted an event here in New Orleans, so we could our part to memorialize our fallen brothers,” said Event Director and Jefferson Parish Firefighter Neil Navarro. “It will be a humbling experience and intense reminder of the sacrifice, dedication, and commitment required of those who serve and protect our communities”.

Participants are raising money for the event. The proceeds go toward the Louisiana Heroes Project, a non-profit organization that supports Louisiana first responders, military and veterans.

The St. George Fire Department is holding a fundraiser t-shirt sale with proceeds benefiting the New Orleans 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb charity.

Shirts cost $20 each. To place an order, individuals should send a text message to R. Underwood at (225) 348-2861 or message the St. George Fire Department on Facebook with t-shirt sizes.

The 2nd Annual New Orleans 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb will be held on September 9, 2017 at 400 Poydras Tower located at 400 Poydras St. from 7:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m.
