2018: Back-to-school events, supply drives

The first day of school is right around the corner and many organizations are holding back-to-school events and supply drives to get everyone ready.

SUPPLY/UNIFORM GIVEAWAYS & DRIVES

ST. VINCENT DE PAUL UNIFORMS FOR KIDS: St. Vincent de Paul provides uniforms for kids in East Baton Rouge Parish in Head Start, pre-k, elementary, and middle schools, including charter schools. SDVP also provides assistance for kids in private schools on vouchers or scholarships. Appointments must be scheduled in person at the SVDP Thrift Store, located at 2655 Plank Rd., from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. each weekday until all appointments are filled. Be sure to bring the following items/documents:

  • Picture ID
  • Social Security card and child(ren)'s Social Security card
  • Proof of income (current food stamp letter, check stub, disability letter, etc.)
  • Copy of voucher or scholarship letter (for children in private schools)
  • Report cards for children 13 and older or letter from child's school with grade for 2018-19 school year
  • Birth certificates for Head Start children (child must be 3 by September 30)

SVDP does not provide uniforms with school logos. They give out the following color uniforms:

  • Shirts
    • Burgundy
    • Navy
    • Red
    • White
    • Forest green
  • Bottoms
    • Navy
    • Khaki

UNIFORMS FOR KIDS BY HOPE MINISTRY OF POINTE COUPEE: Hope Ministry provides uniforms to kids in need attending Pointe Coupee Head Start, pre-k, elementary, and middle schools. They also provide assistance for kids in private schools on vouchers or scholarships. The event will be held July 11 and 12 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Hope Ministry office, located at 506 Olinde St. in New Roads. To qualify for Head Start assistance, the child must attend a school and by 3-years-old by September 30. Parents or guardians should bring the following documentation to apply:

  • Picture ID
  • Social Security card and child(ren)'s Social Security card(s)
  • Proof of income (current food stamp letter, disability letter, check stubs, etc.)
  • Report card for kids 13 and older in middle school or letter from child's school
  • Letter from Head Start with child's name on it, stating he/she qualifies to attend the 2018-19 school year

Only white shirts (without school logo) and khaki bottoms will be provided. For more info, click here, or call 225-618-8300.

FROM OUR UNIFORMS TO YOURS: The Walker Police Department's annual From Our Uniforms to Yours drive is underway. Collection barrels are located at the Walker Quick & Handy Cleaners, Stine Lumber, Los Sombreros Restaurant, Shopper's Value, Carter's Supermarket, Walker Baptist Church, and the Walker Police Department. The department is collecting old school uniforms to be donated to kids in need. Collected uniforms will be distributed to families with kids in Livingston Parish schools. Cash donations will also be accepted. Donate through PayPal. Uniforms will be distributed Friday, July 27 at the Walker Baptist Church Fellowship Hall beginning at 8 a.m.


EVENTS

CATS BACK TO SCHOOL BASH: Aetna Better Health of Louisiana is partnering with CATS to host this back-to-school bash at the CATS Bus Terminal on Friday, July 13 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The event features school supply giveaways, opportunities for kids to get wellness visits, as well as other community resources. Events for kids include face painting, healthy food and drinks, health screenings, bike rack demonstrations, and lots more. Children must be present to receive school supplies (limit to one per child). 

SUMMER JAM: The Family Service of Greater Baton Rouge is presenting their Summer Jam event on Saturday, July 28 from 12 to 4 p.m. The event will be held at Gus Young Community Park, located at 4200 Gus Young Ave. in Baton Rouge. The event features live entertainment, free health screenings, fun activities for kids, live DJ, school supply giveaways (while supplies last), and surprise guests. JESS' BRA CLOSET 7TH ANNUAL BACK-TO-SCHOOL EVENT: The event will be held Sunday, July 29 at JESS BraCloset, located at 6955 Florida Blvd. in Baton Rouge from 3 to 6 p.m. Females in grades K through 12th are invited to attend and will receive free undergarments, personal, and feminine hygiene products, along with some basic school supplies. There will be a motivational speaker, door prizes, and light refreshments. JESS BraCloset takes donations year round. Click here to donate.

10TH ANNUAL DISTRICT 6 BACK TO SCHOOL EXTRAVAGANZA: Councilwoman Donna Collins-Lewis, in partnership with Baton Rouge Community College (BRCC), New Hope Baptist Church, Star Hill Church, and Professional Athletes Supporting Students (PASS), is hosting the event on Saturday, August 4 at the BRCC Wellness Center, located at 201 Community College Dr. The event will be held from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. The event includes food, school supplies, education on safety, and ID badges for kids. The child MUST be present to receive school supplies.
