When the Saints signed sure-fire Hall of Fame running back Adrian Peterson this off-season, reaction seemingly spilled out from everywhere. Everywhere, that is, except from incumbent Saints running back Mark Ingram.

"I just watched the moves be made, I don't really feel one way or the other about it," Ingram told reporters at the team's mini-camp. "I just play the hand that's dealt to me."

Coming off a 2016 season that saw career highs with 1,043 yards and 5.1 yards per carry, many expected in Ingram to become the main bell-cow running back in the Saints' offense - that is, until the team brought in the seven-time Pro Bowler. However, from the likes of Darren Sproles to Tim Hightower, sharing the backfield load is nothing new for Ingram.

"That's pretty much been the makeup of this backfield, numerous guys who could start anywhere in the league," Ingram said. "Coming from college to my rookie year to two years ago to last year, it's always been a number of guys who are very talented and athletic. (The) competition is not new."

"Obviously, there's a ton of excitement around the signing of Adrian Peterson," Saints quarterback Drew Brees said. "But let's not forget that we have Mark Ingram."

Brees has had a front row seat to Ingram's entire professional career, and says he still expects big things from the Alabama product.

"What he's been able to accomplish here over the last three years, we've really leaned on him at times," Brees said. "He's done a fantastic job, and not only that, he's easily become in my opinion one of the best all-purpose backs in this league."

Now don't get Ingram wrong, there's no bad blood between he and Peterson.

"We're cool, man," Ingram said with a smile. "Like, that's my guy, you know?"

However, that will not keep Ingram from pushing from every carry and every touch he can possibly get."

"Of course you want the ball," Ingram said. "Of course I want to rush for a thousand yards, of course I want my yards per carry to be over five yards. I just want to keep improving, keep building on it."
