Troopers identify body of pedestrian found 2 days after being hit by car

IBERVILLE PARISH, LA (WAFB) - A man called law enforcement because he hit something while he was driving, but didn't know what it was. After a search, a body was found in a ditch. That body has now been identified.

According to the Iberville Parish Sheriff's Office, the driver called on Monday, April 17 about the incident. He reportedly told dispatchers that he hit something on the side of the road.

Deputies and detectives went to the area and searched, but didn't find anything.

On Wednesday, April 19, they returned to search again. This time, at roughly 12:20 p.m., they found a body in the ditch.

The body was located between LA 404 and Bayou Sorrel Rd.

Around 12:45 p.m. on Wednesday, Louisiana State Police began their investigation into the incident. It was determined the crash happened on the evening of April 17 and claimed the life of Randy L. Romig, 46, of Plaquemine.

Troopers said the crash happened Monday night around 9 p.m. as Romig was walking northbound along Hwy. 75. At the same time, Darrell Spencer, 56, also of Plaquemine, was driving northbound on Hwy. 75 in a 2004 Dodge Ram pickup. For reasons still under investigation, the pickup hit Roming as he was walking along the highway.

After the collision, Spencer called the Iberville Parish Sheriff's Office to tell them he thought he struck an object on the side of the road. Deputies arrived on the scene, but could not find anything.

On Wednesday, Romig's family was searching along Hwy. 75 and located his body in a ditch alongside the highway. The Iberville Parish Coroner's Office arrived on scene and pronounced Romig dead. Impairment is not suspected to be a factor in this incident.
