LEONVILLE, LA (WAFB) - *UPDATE: Father Ohiaege was found safe Monday afternoon driving on I-49, says St. Landry Parish Sheriff Bobby Guidroz. He has been returned to Leonville.
Bishop Douglas Deshotel of the Diocese of Lafayette is asking for the public's prayers and assistance in locating Father Julius Ohiaege, who is a member of the Claretian Missionaries Religious Congregation in Nigeria.
Father Ohiaege was last seen at the Lafayette Regional Airport on Sunday afternoon around 2 p.m. and has not been heard from since. According to the St. Landry Parish Sheriff's Office, Ohiaege was dropping off Father Kenneth Domingue at the airport and has not been seen since. Officials say Ohiaege has not returned to Leonville and his phone has lost its charge as well.
Residents are asked to keep a lookout for a 2010 white Toyota Camry with license plate TNZ489. The car is under Domingue's name.
St. Landry Parish officials say Ohiaege's phone pinged in Baton Rouge sometime Sunday before the battery died.
"He's from Nigeria. He speaks English. Right now it's a welfare concern. All we know is that he's filling in for Father Domingue because he's on a mission overseas. He made contact with the church and said he's lost and his phone is dying. Right now it's not considered a case of foul play," said Major Eddie Thibodeaux with St. Landry Parish Sheriff's Office.
The diocese of Lafayette says Ohiaege is temporarily residing at St. Leo the Great Church in Leonville and is new to the U.S. and Louisiana. While officials do not suspect foul play, they do believe Ohiaege is lost.
Anyone with information on Ohiaege's whereabouts should contact the Leonville Police Department of the St. Landry Parish Sheriff's Office.
