Household hazardous materials collection day set in EBR Parish

Residents who live in East Baton Rouge Parish can dispose of a variety of potentially dangerous items during Household Hazardous Materials Collection Day on Saturday, April 29.

The event will be held at Memorial Stadium in Baton Rouge from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

City-parish recycling manager, Susan Hamilton, says this event is only for the collection of residential household hazardous materials. Materials generated by businesses and other commercial sources, or material from people who live outside of EBR Parish, will not be accepted.

Vehicles entering the drop-off site will be required to show proof of residence, such as a driver's license, state issued ID, or passport. Items being dropped off will be checked to ensure they are on the list for accepted materials.

Household hazardous materials that will be taken include:

  • Alkaline batteries
  • Automobile tires
  • Auto products (used oil, antifreeze, brake fluid, oil/fuel filters)
  • Ballasts/compact fluorescent bulbs
  • Cleaning products
  • Cooking oil
  • Fertilizers
  • Fluorescent tubes
  • Gasoline
  • Insecticides/pesticides
  • Lead acid
  • Nickel-cadmium
  • Oil/paint products
  • Pool chemicals
  • Stereos/TVs

Liquids must be in labeled, closed containers of 5 gallons or less to be accepted. Items that will NOT be accepted include:

  • Ammunition
  • Appliances (white goods)
  • Biomedical hazardous material
  • Building materials containing asbestos
  • Computers/monitors (including computer components)
  • Construction/demolition debris
  • Copiers
  • Explosives
  • Fax machines
  • Fire extinguishers
  • Fireworks
  • Furniture
  • Large gas cylinders (helium, acetylene, freon)
  • Non-residential waste
  • Radioactive devices (smoke/fire detectors)
  • School lab waste
  • Styrofoam peanuts
