BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - On Friday, Baton Rouge police officers came together to help a brother in blue recover after a tragic accident.
BRPD held a blood drive for Officer Rickey Faust at their headquarters on Airline Hwy. Faust was injured last month in a wreck on I-12 while on duty. Since then, he's had two surgeries to repair damage to his ribs and spine. Chief Carl Dabadie says it's important for the BRPD family to come together in a time such as this.
"We're one big family here and when somebody's hurt, we're all hurt and we're here to do our part and help Rickey in any way that we can," said Dabadie.
Officer Faust was responding to a call on Tuesday, March 21 when the wreck occurred. Faust was driving his police unit on I-12 E between the Millerville and Sherwood Forest exits when a vehicle switched lanes in front of him, forcing him to swerve.
Faust lost control of his vehicle and crashed into the concrete barrier in the median. Faust sustained serious injuries to his spine and ribs in the wreck. He remains in the ICU on a respirator and has undergone two surgeries on his spine, as well as several procedures to remove fluid from his lungs.
Officials with BRPD say Faust was released from the ICU for a time, but an infection sent him back into to the hospital, but he continues to recover.
