BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - A tip to Crime Stoppers helped police arrest a man who is accused of an armed robbery.
Greater Baton Rouge Crime Stoppers said Richard Jones, 26, was identified as a suspect because he dropped his cellphone as he attempted to flee after the robbery.
According to investigators, the incident happened on Nicholson Drive near Magnolia Mound on Nov. 6, 2016. Police said Jones walked up to a man, pointed a gun at him and demanded his wallet.
According to reports, the victim grabbed the gun and during the struggle, the gun reportedly went off twice and both bullets hit the ground.
Authorities said the victim ended up with the gun, but gave Jones $15 anyway. They added Jones took the money and ran away.
Investigators were able to pull DNA off the cellphone, which identified Jones as the suspected robber.
Jones was booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison for armed robbery.
