St. Alphonsus Catholic School honors first responders

CENTRAL, LA (WAFB) - The students over at St. Alphonsus Catholic School in Central showed their appreciation for first responders Friday.

Deputy Bruce Simmons with the East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff's Office carried the "torch" for the school's Olympic field day.

Simmons was one of six law enforcement officers shot in the line of duty during an ambush on police last summer.

Friday's event is already special for the students, but this year, they wanted to make it extra special for the brave heroes who go above and beyond the call of duty every day.

"A long list everything else that's happened this year," said Cindy Ryals, principal of St. Alphonsus Catholic School. "They've had a very trying year. We are blessed with so many first responder parents that this is an awesome opportunity to honor them and show them how much they appreciate them."

Simmons was not the only hero honored. Close to two dozen other first responders were also thanked for their services.
