BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - East Baton Rouge District Attorney Hillar Moore was honored Thursday.
He is this year's Champion of Change honoree for his part in making sure sexual assault victims get all the help they need through the STAR program.
STAR, which was formally the Rape Crisis Center, now assists victims not only in East Baton Rouge Parish but across the state thanks in part to Moore's dedication to the organization.
Moore said he hopes more people will decide to support STAR so even more victims can be helped within our state.
"This is a really big day for Baton Rouge," Moore said. "We really have very little state or local funding to help victims of sexual assault and we rely a lot on people, just our regular citizens, to sponsor us. This is an event that brings everyone together to recognize the issues we have and the lack of funding. Hopefully, [it's] a way to get the word out that we need funding to help our victims in our own community."
STAR is the only sexual assault center working specifically to help victims in a seven-parish area. The organization has helped more than 10,000 community members in the last five years.
