BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - Firefighters responded to a fire early Monday morning that is believed to have been caused by a lightning strike.
The St. George Fire Department reported it happened on Victory Hill Court, which is off University Club Drive, around 3:30 a.m.
Eldon Ledoux with SGFD said smoke and flames were seen on the roof of a large two-story home.
He added the owners told investigators the thunder from a very close lightning strike woke them up and a short time later, a smoke detector alarm went off due to smoke on the second floor.
According to SGFD, the couple and pets escaped safely.
"The lightning had ignited a fire inside the outer wall," Ledoux said in a written release. "Firefighters contained the fire to the wall."
Officials reported it took just under an hour to get the fire under control.
They added firefighters kept the flames from spreading, but there was moderate to serious fire, smoke and water damage to the home.
