Man flees officer, crashes, and dies, leaves 1 injured

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - According to officials, Baton Rouge Police responded to a car crash on the morning of April 1 just before 11 a.m.

The crash occurred in the 5400 block of Choctaw Dr. in Baton Rouge, just blocks away from a deadly shooting that took place earlier that morning.

Officials say Dan Spland, the driver of a 2002 Lexus, fled from an officer who tried to pull him over after observing him swerving in the roadway.

Spland, traveling west bound on Choctaw Dr., entered into the opposite lane and lost control. Another SUV, traveling east bound on Choctaw Dr., struck the passenger side of Spland's vehicle, according to BRPD spokesperson Sgt. L'Jean McKneely.

Spland was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Suburban was transported to a local hospital with minor injuries.

The crash is still under investigation.
