The New Orleans Pelicans announced their intent to launch an NBA Developmental League team to begin playing in the 2018-2019 season.

They’ve sent a proposal to 11 different Gulf South cities to serve as a home for the team. That includes seven cities in Louisiana, two in Mississippi, one in Alabama and one in Florida. Those cities haven’t been named yet.

In a statement from the Pelicans, team owner Tom Benson said, “Our goal is to establish a Development League team in nearby proximity to our home base of New Orleans.”

Benson went on to say that it’s a necessary investment in the future of the Pelicans and will allow the opportunity to widen the spectrum of fans that come in contact with the organization on a regional basis.

The NBA D-League currently features 22 teams with three more connected to the Atlanta Hawks, Memphis Grizzlies and Milwaukee Bucks set to join in the 2017-2018 season.
