DENHAM SPRINGS, LA (WAFB) - A man from Denham Springs has been sentenced to life in prison following the 2016 murder of Derrick Stewart.
Brian Allen, 25, was sentenced to life in prison without the benefit of probation, parole, or suspension of sentence on Monday, March 27, for the second degree murder of Stewart and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, says District Attorney Scott M. Perrilloux.
In February, a unanimous jury found Allen guilty of the murder. During the three day trial, the events that led up to the shooting were explained to the jury and numerous witnesses testified.
The state showed the jury more than 60 pieces of evidence that proved Allen committed the crime. Among that evidence was a home surveillance video that recorded the murder. The video showed Stewart trying to leave the area in his vehicle when the vehicle Allen was driving blocked the road. Steward backed his vehicle down the street, trying to get away, when Allen began to follow Stewart in his vehicle. Allen could be seen in the surveillance footage shooting at Stewart's vehicle after exiting his own.
While in custody in Livingston Parish, Allen made multiple phone calls in reference to his alibi, wiping his fingerprints off the gun, and about hiding the gun. All calls were recorded on the jail's phone system and were heard by the jury.
