Dump truck driver arrested in fatal wreck in Ascension Parish; victim identified

ASCENSION PARISH, LA (WAFB) - A man from Norwood has been arrested in connection with a fatal wreck that occurred in Ascension Parish Friday morning.

Just before 9 a.m. of Friday, March 17, troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop A began investigating a five vehicle wreck that occurred at the intersection of US 61 and Highway 929 (Post Office Rd.) in Ascension Parish. The crash resulted in the death of Kathie Polite, 60, of Springfield, and the arrest of David Henley, 59, of Norwood.

The initial investigation by LSP revealed the wreck happened as Henley was driving northbound on US 61 in a 2000 Mack dump truck. As he approached the intersection on US 61 and Hwy. 929, officials say he failed to stop for red light and drove through the intersection. At the same time, Polite was driving westbound on Hwy. 929 in a 2014 Chevy Equinox. As Polite began to make a left turn onto US 61 southbound, her vehicle was struck on the driver's side by Henley's dump truck. The impact caused both vehicles to cross the median into the southbound lanes of US 61, hitting three other vehicles that were stopped in the southbound turn lane.

Polite was properly restrained at the time of the wreck, but sustained fatal injuries nonetheless. She was pronounced dead on the scene by the Ascension Parish Coroner's Office.

One other driver sustained minor injuries and was transported to an area hospital for treatment. Impairment is not suspected as a factor in this wreck, but a toxicology sample will be taken from all drivers for analysis.

Henley was placed under arrest and booked into Ascension Parish Jail for negligent homicide and disregarding a traffic control.
