Illegal immigrant sentenced to 6.5 years in prison for cocaine trafficking

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - An illegal immigrant has been sentenced to 78 months in prison for his role in attempting to bring 6 kilograms of cocaine into Baton Rouge in a rental car, says U.S. Attorney Walt Green.

Silvestre Gutierrez, 39, of Mexico, was sentenced to 78 months in federal prison after pleading guilty on September 7, 2016 to conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute cocaine and illegal reentry by a previously removed alien.

Gutierrez and his co-conspirators were arrested back on February 29, 2016 after officers discovered 15 vacuum-sealed packages of cocaine floating in the gas tank of their rental vehicle. Officials say Gutierrez also had in his possession the receipts for items used to vacuum seal the cocaine for transportation. It was also discovered Gutierrez was not legally in the country and had previously been deported on two separate occasions.

The case was investigated by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration and the Baton Rouge Police Department.
