PLAQUEMINE, LA (WAFB) - A deputy-involved shooting occurred near Cypress Seafood on Hwy. 1 in Plaquemine on Friday afternoon just before 3 p.m., according to the Iberville Parish Sheriff's Office.

Officials say they were attempting to conduct a traffic stop on a suspect they believed was bringing drugs into the parish. They say the last time they dealt with this suspect, he led deputies on a high-speed chase through a residential neighborhood.

Deputies got behind the vehicle, being driven by the suspect, Gregory Hardin, 32, of Addis, but the vehicle would not stop. Officials say a deputy then got in front of his vehicle with his weapon drawn, identified himself, and instructed Hardin to stop. Officials say the vehicle then kept coming forward towards the deputy, so the deputy fired at the vehicle and struck the passenger in the elbow.

Officials say the female passenger sustained non-life threatening injuries. Hardin was taken into custody by Iberville deputies, who will conduct an interview with the suspect. Charges for Hardin are pending.

Louisiana State Police is taking over the investigation into the deputy-involved shooting, which is ongoing.
