HAMMOND, LA (WAFB) -

Officials say the victim of a shooting has died and they are still seeking the person responsible.

The Hammond Police Department reported Demarkius Jackson, 27, of Hammond, was shot multiple times early Tuesday morning. Investigators said he was taken to North Oaks Medical Center. After spending several months in critical condition, he died on March 7, 2017.

Officials said officers were called to the intersection of East David Drive and Martin Luther King Boulevard around 1 a.m. after someone reported hearing shot fired. Police said Jackson was found inside a car suffering from several gunshot wounds.

According to police, Jackson shot Martin Baker, 24, of Hammond, on Dec. 29, 2016 during an argument. Investigators said Baker died as a result of the shooting. They added the shooting was deemed justifiable and Jackson was cleared of any charges.

Detectives believe Jackson was shot in retaliation for Baker’s death.

The investigation is ongoing.
