(RNN) - Fruity drinks like margaritas are often spring and summertime staples.

But doctors at The American Academy of Dermatology say that margaritas combined with sunlight can be a possible cause of skin rash.

Alcoholic beverages that contain citrus - like lime-flavored beer or margaritas - can cause itchy red skin when the person consuming them is exposed to the sun for extended periods of time. It's a condition called phytophotodermatitis.

To prevent the rash from appearing, Dr.  Julian Trevino, professor and chair at Wright State University in Dayton, OH, recommends rinsing the skin and reapplying sunscreen after consuming drinks with citrus while outside.

As spring approaches, people are likely to be outside more often, so it is good to be aware of so many things that can cause skin irritation before it happens.
