HAMMOND, LA (AP) - In only its second trip to the state tournament, the Madison Prep Chargers have defeated the Rayville Hornets 56-39 to capture the 2017 Louisiana High School Athletic Association Class 2A girls basketball state championship Saturday.
The win for Madison Prep (25-5) was its first-ever girls basketball state championship, while Rayville finishes the season 19-10.
Madison Prep jumped out to a 21-9 lead at the end of the first quarter after forcing Rayville into multiple turnovers. Rayville finished the game with 29 turnovers, compared to 10 from Madison Prep.
The Chargers were led by senior guard Sherry Porter, who finished with 21 points, five rebounds and five steals. Junior forward Dezmanique Gaines had 11 points, eight rebounds and six steals.
Rayville was led by Micaela Wilson, who had 15 points and seven rebounds, while T'Kira Fullers had a double-double, 10 points and 12 rebounds.
