Baton Rouge hosts 2017 Special Olympics Indoor Games

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - The 2017 Special Olympics Louisiana (SOLA) State Indoor Games held opening ceremonies on Friday.

The event kicked off at 7 p.m. at Team Automotive Group Sportsplex, located at 7122 Perkins Road in Baton Rouge, and will follow with sports tournaments for nearly 750 qualified athletes on Saturday and Sunday.

The opening ceremonies included the arrival of the Olympic torch, the parade of athletes, and the lighting of the Olympic Flames of Hope by local law enforcement officers.

Athletes who qualified at local competitions will compete against each other in basketball, bowling, and tennis beginning at 9 a.m. Saturday and 8 a.m. Sunday. Basketball games will take place at Team Automotive Group Sportsplex; bowling will be held at All Star Lanes and Circle Bowl; and tennis matches will be played at Independence Park (indoor courts). Competitions will end Sunday after all events are complete.
