Assumption Parish officials warn residents of Entergy scam

ASSUMPTION PARISH, LA (WAFB) -

Assumption Parish Sheriff Leland Falcon reports that complaints are being made in reference to residents being directed to particular businesses to purchase "Green Dot" money cards to pay delinquent Entergy bills.

Residents are then instructed to scratch the number off the back of the card and call a pre-determined 1-800 number to pay their utility bill.

After calling the number on the back of the card, the value of the card is lost to the person called and is untraceable. Officials say the violators appear to be foreign nationals, with the scheme originating in New York.

The Sheriff urges residents to not use "Green Dot" money cards for any reason. Many businesses have discontinued use of the cards due to this scam.

Officials say Entergy has been contacted and made aware of the scam. If you receive a call soliciting money for your Entergy bill, call 1-800-ENT-ERGY and the Sheriff's Office at 985-369-2912 immediately.
