PAINCOURTVILLE, LA (WAFB) - Investigators said the passenger in a car was killed when the driver turned in front of an SUV on Tuesday.
Louisiana State Police identified the victim as Aja Brown, 20, of Houma.
Troopers reported the investigation so far showed Taris Gregory, 21, of Napoleonville, was driving west on LA 70 near Paincourtville in a 2016 Honda Civic around 7 p.m. They added he tried to make a left turn onto LA Spur 70 at the same time a 2000 Ford Excursion was headed east on LA 70.
Tpr. Jesse LaGrange with LSP said the SUV t-boned the car on the passenger side. He said Brown was sitting in the front passenger seat at the time. She was pronounced dead at the scene by the Assumption Parish Coroner's Office.
Authorities said Gregory was taken to Our Lady of the Lake Medical Center in Baton Rouge with minor injuries. They added the driver of the SUV was not injured.
LaGrange said investigators don't suspect impairment was a factor in the crash, but per protocol for deadly crashes on Louisiana highways, a sample of Gregory's blood was taken and sent to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis. LaGrange stated the other driver provided a breath sample and alcohol was not detected.
The investigation is ongoing.
