LIVINGSTON PARISH, LA (WAFB) - Just before 1 a.m. on Tuesday, December 20, troopers with Louisiana State Police Troop A began investigating a two vehicle wreck on I-12 E west of LA 43 in Livingston Parish that claimed the life of Paula Cruze, 83, of Mexico City. Cody Terry, 35, of Houston, TX was arrested as a result of the wreck.
The initial investigation by LSP revealed the wreck occurred as Terry was traveling eastbound on I-12 in a 2001 Chevy Impala, while at the same time, Julio Cardenas, 33, of Cumming, GA was also traveling eastbound on I-12 in a 1999 Ford Expedition. For reasons still under investigation, Terry's vehicle struck the rear of Cardena's vehicle, causing it to strike a concrete barrier. Officials say after Terry's vehicle ran of the right side of the road, he immediately fled the scene on foot.
Officials say there were eight passengers in Cardena's vehicle. They were all transported to North Oaks Hospital in Hammond. Shortly after arriving at the hospital, Cruze began to experience complications and was later pronounced dead.
With assistance from the Livingston Parish Sheriff's Office, LSP troopers were able to locate Terry in the Holden area. After further investigation, it was determined that Terry was the driver of the Impala. He was booked into the Livingston Parish Jail on charges of negligent homicide, felony hit and run, reckless operation, no driver's license, and failure to register a motor vehicle.
The crash remains under investigation.
