LUTCHER, LA (WAFB) - Another quarterback headed to LSU to play defensive back has won Sportsline Player of the Week the 3rd game of his sophomore season, but the senior saved his best for last Saturday in the Superdome.
Jontre Kirklin's scrambling not only produced 223 yards rushing, but created time to throw three huge touchdown passes against a swarming Amite defense, leading his Lutcher Bulldogs to back-to-back Class 3A Championships.
Kirklin racked up 158 yards passing and added a 4th TD rushing in the 40-36 victory, to go with 381 yards of total offense, surpassing former Lutcher greats like Blaine Gautier and Gavin Webster, who won multiple awards, but fell short of back-to-back state titles.
"I just run, I mean I use my legs as my advantage. All the working out in the weight room, squats, power clean, all that, it gives a lot of explosiveness and in my running, if I don't feel like I'm going to go down, I'm not going to go down," said Kirklin.
"There was a play maybe in the second round or the third round, the quarterfinals, where we ran a power and the guy just kind of fell on the ground and there's a picture of it where Jontre's going into the end zone and his feet are probably five feet in the air. So his feet are at the same level as most people's heads. So his athletic ability is off the charts," Dwain Jenkins, Lutcher head coach.
