Beauregard Town Civic Association pushes back against new Sonic

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - Baton Rouge is about to get a new Sonic Drive-In, but not everyone is thrilled.

Developers have submitted a building permit for a location on Government St. near the entrance to I-110. The Beauregard Town Civic Association, who wants to preserve the historical appeal of the neighborhood, has several concerns.

"We feel like Beauregard Town, out of anywhere in Baton Rouge, has a very great cultural identity, and so we don't feel like those things have been addressed with the planning as well, as good planning is important in minimizing traffic congestion and we're in an area right here where there's a lot of traffic," said Jeff Kuehny of the Beauregard Town Civic Association.

City officials say that the area is already zoned for commercial use and the street has the capacity to support the business. However, the civic association says they will talk with the planning office to come up with some kind of compromise.
