Sportsline Friday Nite might be done for the year, but there are still more Sportsline Player of the Week awards to present and they're big ones because they come from performances on the biggest stage, the state championships in the Superdome.
One goes to a guy who's just a sophomore, yet he wiped out the Class 1A/Division IV record for rushing yards in a championship game last Friday, rushing for 244 yards to lead Southern Lab to its second straight title. Tyrion Davis topped the mark set by White Castle's Tyree Bracken back in 2010. Amazingly Davis only needed eight carries against undefeated and top-seed Ascension Episcopal to set the mark and score three touchdowns, going for 52, 57 and 85 yards to score half of the Kittens points in a 36-9 blowout, earning him the game's Most Outstanding Performer Award.
In the Divsion III game that followed another underclassmen, Riverside junior quarterback Jordan Loving was nearly flawless, passing for 205 yards and two touchdowns. Loving spread the wealth among five different receivers and even caught a pass himself, as the Rebels raced out to a 34-to-7 halftime lead against rival St Charles Catholic. In just two quarters, Loving had 16 of his 17 completions in just 18 attempts, putting the game on ice by the time the fourth quarter rolled around, as Riverside won its first-ever LHSAA title 47-20 a year after falling one game short.
