BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - A suspect was wounded Tuesday afternoon in a shooting involving deputies with the East Baton Rouge Parish Office, officials have confirmed.
It happened near the intersection of Airline Highway and Prescott Road around 1:30 p.m.
EMS took the suspect to the hospital. EBRSO identified him as George Pikes, 23, of Baton Rouge.
Louisiana State Police said he was shot in the arm and his injuries are not considered life-threatening. EBRSO said no deputies were injured.
EBRSO said Pikes faces at least three counts of distribution of heroin. That will be added to Pike's already long rap sheet, which records show includes stealing a car, theft, resisting an officer, and several drugs and weapons charges.
According to EBRSO, the suspect was part of an undercover drug investigation. Officials said the shooting happened during a traffic stop in the park lot of the Mr. Po-Boys restaurant on Airline Highway.
The sheriff's office said undercover deputies had set up a controlled buy with Pikes and successfully purchased drugs from him. However, at some point, things went wrong. Officials would not go into details about what led up to guns being drawn and fired or who fired first, but witnesses described a chaotic scene.
Nicole Warren said she was standing nearby when the cars pulled in. Her two children were waiting in a car at the front of the parking lot when shots were fired.
"I took off running with my kids still in the car," Warren said. "All I could say is, 'My kids! My kids!'"
While Warren and her kids were not hurt, she said a bullet hit the side of their car.
Pikes apparently drove off. Investigators found Pikes and his car about a mile away at a home near Laca Street at Brierwood Drive, which is off Glen Oaks Drive. The red car they examined had busted out windows.
Meanwhile, Louisiana State Police will investigate the shooting.
"We will work to uncover all evidence and see what actually took place during this incident," said LSP TFC Bryan Lee.
Officials said the deputies involved have been placed on paid leave, which is standard procedure.
