BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - A man was arrested Friday evening after accidentally shooting himself in the stomach during an attempted home invasion.
According to the probable cause report, on Friday, December 3 around 6 p.m., the victim alerted police that he heard someone turning the doorknob of his apartment on Cezanne Dr. The victim states as he opened the door, a man, later identified as Calvin E. Edwards II, 35, of Baton Rouge pushed the door and attempted to get inside the apartment.
The victim states he pushed Edwards back and the two began to struggle on the balcony. The report states that during the altercation, Edwards removed a handgun from his pants with his right hand.
The victim states he saw the gun and grabbed Edwards' hand. Edwards then allegedly fired the gun at least two times, accidentally shooting himself in the stomach in the process.
The victim and Edwards continued to fight when an unknown person arrived and pulled Edwards away. While the unknown person was pulling Edwards away, he allegedly fired at least two more shots.
Edwards arrived at Our Lady of the Lake Hospital around 8:45 p.m. the same day with a gunshot wound in his abdomen. Officials were contacted by hospital staff and Edwards was later arrested.
Edwards is charged with attempted home invasion, attempted second degree murder, and illegal use of a weapon. He was booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison where he is being held on a $125,000 bond.
