BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - A Christmas tree lighting in Baton Rouge was a celebration in more ways than one.
Thursday night, cancer survivors and their families joined together to light the tree at the Mary Bird Perkins Our Lady of the Lake Cancer Center. Survivors hand-painted the tree's ornaments. The sound of jingle bells will ring all through the Christmas season. Upon finishing treatment, patients ring a bell to mark the finish line to part of their journey.
"The symbolism of the lighting of the tree is representing all of the patients and the families that we've served, in honor of them, which makes the lighting even more special," said Linda Lee, administrator at the Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center.
The ringing of the bells also serves as a reminder for those still undergoing treatment that their day will come too.
