BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -

The Louisiana state gas tax hasn’t been raised in over 25 years, but now, there’s a possibility it could be.

DOTD Secretary Shawn Wilson will meet with the Governor’s Transportation Task Force later this week to discuss funding options.

Raising the gas tax by as much as 20 cents is on possibility. Right now, the state tax is 20 cents.

Wilson said the state has $13 billion worth of maintenance work that needs to be completed.

"In order for us to reduce that backlog and/or achieve the kind of projects that we want to do, that the citizens are demanding, we're going to have to pay for it," Wilson said. "You don't get very much for anything these days. So, we are looking forward to having a really healthy discussion on sustainable, best practices."

The transportation task force meeting will be at the Louisiana State Capitol on Thursday at 9 a.m.

The public is invited to attend.
