Sportsline Player of the Week is going to a couple of guys who helped No. 7 seeds advance in the playoffs.
U-High sophomore Mike Hollins came up huge for the Cubs' upset of No. 2 seed Loyola Prep in Shreveport. Hollins, in just his second game after missing half the season with a high ankle sprain, scored two touchdowns and rolled up 226 yards rushing on just 24 carries as U-High advanced to the state semifinals, with 27 second half points in an impressive 41-25 victory.
"This is really my first injury where I missed games," Hollins said. "It was hard to watch my team out there. I really wanted to be out there with them, but I came back, St Michael, feeling good, ready to get back out there with my team."
"I think he's handled it fine," said U-High head football coach Chad Mahaffey. "He didn't just disappear or kind of mentally check out. He wanted to get back and I think he's done all the right things and he's now back a hundred percent healthy."
In Class 3A, the No. 7 seed is Amite and Louisiana Tech recruit Elijah Walker racked up big numbers against South Beauregard in a 59-19 blowout. The Warriors quarterback ran for 97 yards and two scores and bombed the South Beauregard secondary through the air with 12 completions in 16 attempts for another 235 yards passing and six touchdowns. Walker accounted for a total of eight touchdowns and said his knowledge of the playbook and scouting reports almost feels like cheating.
"The main important thing is you have to know the plays," Walker said. "You have to know where every receiver and every lineman's going. You know that, you know the coverages, that's the cheat right there."
"He's a big brother," said Amite head football coach Zephaniah Powell. "He's in church every Sunday. And, if he's not in school or at church, he's right here with us, so he's a very fine young man. Louisiana Tech, they're getting a gem."
