BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - The Southern Jaguars were able to pick off Texas Southern quarterback Averion Hurts three times and turned them into scoring drives to beat the Tigers, 26-10, in A.W. Mumford Stadium for the Military Appreciation Game.
Southern's Treveon Epps picked off Hurts in the second quarter which allowed freshman Herbert Edwards to score later in the drive, giving the Jags a 14-7 lead at halftime.
Danny Johnson made the second interception in the third quarter which led to Southern kicker Ruan Albuquerque hitting one of two 28-yard field goals in the fourth quarter. Roshaud Turner caught Hurts' third intercepted pass, giving Jeremias Houston a chance to score a touchdown after recovering a fumble by Tillery in the end zone.
Running back Lenard Tillery had 125 yards on 22 carries, including a touchdown run in the second quarter. For the third year straight, Tillery has rushed more than 1,000 yards in a season.
Southern quarterback Austin Howard was 18 of 33 for 226 yards as the Jags had a total of 496 offensive yards.
Texas Southern's Hurts was 13 of 24 for 168 yards. He is also the brother of Alabama freshman quarterback Jalen Hurts, who was also playing in Baton Rouge against the LSU Tigers.
Texas Southern's only touchdown came from a pass by Howard in the first quarter that was intercepted by Jarius Moore and returned 73 yards for a pick six.
The Jaguars (7-2, 7-0 SWAC) are on the road again, traveling to face Prairie View A&M at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 12.
