The Louisiana Department of Health has reported the first death related to the West Nile virus in 2016.

In order to protect the patient's privacy, the parish where the death occurred will not be reported by the department. Six additional cases of West Nile have also been reported in the state, bringing the total number of cases for the year to 36. There have also been 34 cases of Zika virus.

Of the West Nile cases reported, three were asymptomatic, 12 were mild fever cases, and 21 were severe neuroinvasive cases, which can lead to brain damage or death.

The Centers for Disease Control reports West Nile cases by state and nationally here. Reports of arboviral disease, which includes West Nile and Zika, in Louisiana are reported weekly here.
