Police say pedestrian killed by suspected drunk driver

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -

A man died after being hit by a suspected drunk driver early Saturday morning, according to authorities.

The Baton Rouge Police Department reported William Thompson, 48, died after getting hit by a vehicle while he was trying to cross Florida Boulevard at North Beck Street.

Police said Quentis Johnson, 36, was arrested in connection with the deadly crash.

According to investigators, Johnson was driving faster than the posted 35 mph limit when he hit Thompson, who was pronounced dead at the scene. 

Reports state Johnson displayed signs of intoxication, including slurred speech, swaying, lack of balance, and had a strong odor of alcohol on his person and breath.

Officials reported a breathalyzer test on Johnson showed his BAC was .117.

Johnson was booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison on charges of vehicular homicide, DWI and reckless operation.

The investigation is ongoing.
