BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - On Friday, October 28, the Louisiana State Supreme Court ruled on a controversial case involving the Diocese of Baton Rouge and a local priest.
Back in 2009, Father Jeff Bayhi and the Diocese of Baton Rouge were sued by a girl who claims she told the priest in confession that she had been sexually abused by a parishioner. She also claims the priest did not report it to authorities.
The teen and her family said a state law required that he do so. The State Supreme Court ruled that the law provides specific exceptions for priests who hear of abuse during confession and they are not required to report the abuse to authorities because it would violate their church laws.
The case was sent back to the trial court for further action.
