State fire marshals say blaze at New Roads elderly living complex likely an accident

NEW ROADS, LA (WAFB) - The fire that broke out at an elderly living complex in New Roads Sunday evening may have been accidental, according to the Louisiana State Fire Marshal's Office.

A preliminary investigation by state fire marshals revealed the fire at the False River Manor Apartments on Hospital Road started near a recliner in the living room of one of the units around 7:40 p.m. Sunday. Officials say the fire only damaged that unit and a neighboring one.

Two firefighter units were called to the scene to contain the fire.

Officials said a 70-year-old woman was inside the apartment where the fire started. She is stable condition after being taken to the hospital with second and possibly third-degree burns on about seven percent of her body.

Investigators believe she may have played a role in the fire but are waiting until she recovers to talk with her about the incident.

An additional person was also transported to the hospital with non-critical injuries.
