LIVINGSTON PARISH, LA (WAFB) - A two vehicle crash that occurred on Saturday morning, October 22, around 5:30 a.m. took the life of Brian K. Broom, 43, of Watson and resulted in the arrest of Ashley E. Covington, 36, of Denham Springs.

The crash occurred on LA Hwy. 16 north of LA Hwy. 1019 in Livingston Parish. The initial investigation by Louisiana State Police revealed that the wreck happened as Covington was driving a 2001 Chevy pickup truck northbound on LA Hwy. 16. At the same time, Broom was traveling southbound on LA Hwy. 16 in a 2009 Chevy Malibu. For unknown reasons, Covington was traveling north in the southbound lane and struck Broom's vehicle head-on.

Broom was not properly restrained at the time of the wreck and suffered severe injuries as a result. He was transported by Acadian Ambulance to Ochsner Medical Center in Baton Rouge, where he later died. It is not suspected that Broom was impaired at the time of the crash.

Covington was properly restrained and suffered minor injuries as a result of the crash. LSP troopers suspect Covington was impaired on narcotics. She was arrested and booked into the Livingston Parish jail for vehicular homicide, improper lane usage, and expired driver's license.
