Officials remind homeowners of Shelter at Home deadline Friday

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - Some very important deadlines are coming up for homeowners recovering from the flood, including one on Friday.

The last day to apply for the Shelter at Home program is Friday, October 21.

Contractors do temporary fixes on homes so that homeowners can live in it and continue the permanent repairs.

Friday is a firm deadline so officials are urging people to get that application finished at all costs.

"At this point in time, this is the deadline for us. It has not been extended through," said Lael Holton, the program's planning manager. "It really is a matter of getting the application into the system, and I would recommend if folks don't have a computer at their house, the disaster recovery system can help them, the parish libraries, or other locations like that that have connections to the internet."

Officials gave an update on the status of mobile housing units.

"We are moving along, I mean, we have 1,000 mobile homes right now, we have 718 families. Last week, that numbers was roughly about 500 of them. So the pace is picking up," said Justo Hernandez with FEMA.

Officials also want to remind people that the final day to register for FEMA assistance is Monday, November 14.
