Troopers say driver died after losing control of car and flipping down embankment

State Police: Driver dies in overturned vehicle crash

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - Investigators said a woman died Wednesday evening after losing control of the car she was driving.

Louisiana State Police identified the victim as Amy Fitzhugh, 39, of Denham Springs.

Troopers said the crash happened on LA 327 (River Road) near Ben Hur Road in Baton Rouge around 7 p.m.

Tpr. Bryan Lee with LSP Troop A said the investigation so far showed Fitzhugh was headed east on River Road in a 2015 Buick Verano when the car veered off the road and she overcorrected. He added that's when she lost control and the car went off the road on the opposite side.

According to Lee, the car went down an embankment and flipped. Lee said Fitzhugh was not wearing a seat belt and was pronounced dead at the scene by the East Baton Rouge Parish Coroner's Office. He added investigators have not yet determined what caused the road to veer off the road prior to Fitzhugh overcorrecting.

Authorities said they don't suspect impairment was a factor in the wreck, but per protocol for deadly crashes on Louisiana highways, a sample of her blood was sent to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis.

The crash remains under investigation.
