Southern Jags hold off Jackson State, 28-24

JACKSON, MS (WAFB) - The Southern Jaguars were able to hold off Jackson State Tigers and win 28-24 in Mississippi.

Southern quarterback Austin Howard was 24 of 35 for 288 yards with two touchdown passes to wide receiver Randall Menard. Lenard Tillery led the Jags' rushing game with 127 yards on 29 carries, scoring two touchdowns.

Willie Quinn had 60 yards receiving, but his only touchdown run that would have been a record-breaking, 66-yard kickoff return was negated by an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty after he celebrated before scoring.

This was the first game for the Jaguars after having a two-week bye period. Southern hosts Arkansas - Pine Bluff next on Saturday, Oct. 22. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m.

WAFB Sports' Craig Loper will have more on the Jaguars' win on 9News at 10.
