Gonzales district fire chief indicted on child pornography charges

GONZALES, LA (WAFB) - A federal grand jury indicted a Gonzales district fire chief Wednesday on charges of having and distributing child porn.

Kristopher Johnson, 36, was formally charged with distributing and possessing child pornography.

Johnson was arrested by the Attorney General Cyber Crime Unit and the Ascension Parish Sheriff's Office on Tuesday, March 8 and charged with 11 counts of pornography involving juveniles.

Court documents said he allegedly sent text messages that included child pornography four different times between November 6 and 7, 2015. He was also accused of having child porn allegedly containing images of children under the age of 12.

Officials said they found evidence of pornography after searching Johnson's home.

Johnson, who has been employed with the Gonzales Fire Department since 2001, was serving as a district fire chief.

In March, Gonzales Fire Chief Tracey Normand said Johnson was placed on administrative leave with pay "as is dictated in the Firefighter Bill of Rights through State Police and Civil Service law." The City of Gonzales Police Department was asked to handle the fire department's internal investigation, according to Normand.

"All of us at the City of Gonzales Fire Department are saddened to learn of this arrest, but are diligent in ensuring that all agencies involved receive the full support of this department," said Normand.

Johnson remains in the Ascension Parish Jail where his bond has been set at $1,100,000.
