Louisiana leaders and Cuban officials made history Tuesday.

"Looking ahead at one day, soon, when the embargo is lifted, we want to make sure Louisiana is in a place where we can resume that relationship when it comes to athletics, trade, tourism, across the board," Gov. John Bel Edwards said.

The Port of South Louisiana and the Port of New Orleans signed Memorandums of Understanding with Cuban ports. Though not an official trade agreement, which the embargo restricts, it does point in that direction. The goal is to increase communication and cooperation between the two.

Before the embargo was instituted, Louisiana and Cuba were large trading partners and even right now, Louisiana exports more to Cuba than any other state.

Leaders also discussed trade and business opportunities.
