LORANGER, LA (WAFB) - Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop L were dispatched to a single vehicle wreck on LA 443 just after 9 a.m. on Sunday, October 2.
The wreck occurred on LA 443 near the intersection of Lanier Rd. in Loranger and claimed the life of Alfred F. Dykes, 69, who had been reported missing the day before when he failed to return from running routine errands.
The preliminary investigation revealed that the crash occurred as Dykes was driving a 2005 Chrysler Town and Country van southbound on LA 443. As he entered a curve, Dykes' vehicle ran off the right side of the road for over 500 ft. before crashing into the ditch at the intersection of Lanier Rd. and LA 443. The impact with the ditch caused the vehicle to become airborne as it crossed Lanier Rd. The van finally came to rest in a creek that crosses LA 443 south of Lanier Rd. Investigators believe the van traveled nearly 700 ft. from the point where it initially came off the road to where it landed in the creek.
Dykes was properly restrained at the time of the wreck, but sustained fatal injuries nonetheless. He was pronounced dead on the scene by the Tangipahoa Parish Coroner's Office. Impairment is not suspected to be a factor in this incident, however troopers did obtain blood samples for analysis at the LSP Crime Lab.
