Third suspect arrested in connection with suspicious death of 68-year-old Butte La Rose man

BUTTE LA ROSE, LA (WAFB) -

Deputies have identified Gary Brackett, 28, of Carencro as a person of interest in the death of a 68-year-old Butte La Rose resident. 

Investigators also sought Brackett's girlfriend, who was identified as Jamie Lee Smith, 35, of Breaux Bridge.

Following an extensive investigation, investigators arrested an additional suspect on Thursday, October 6. Travis Toups, 39, of Carencro is charged with accessory after the fact to first degree murder. Brackett has also been charged with first degree murder, while Smith is charged with accessory after the fact to first degree murder and obstruction of justice. 

Brackett and Smith were arrested in Opelousas on Thursday, September 29 and were charged with unauthorized use of a movable after it was found that the victim's vehicle was missing from his residence. Smith was booked into the St. Martin Parish Correctional Center. Her bond has been set at $30,000.

Brackett and Toups are currently at the Lafayette Parish Correctional Center on charges unrelated to this case. Both will be extradited to the St. Martin Parish Correctional Center where they will be booked on the above charges. Smith is currently at the St. Martin Parish Correctional Center and has already been booked.

No bond has been set at this time. 

According to the St. Martin Parish Sheriff's Office, deputies found Richard Hanson, 68, in a home located in the 2000 block of Atchafalaya River Hwy. in Butte La Rose. Deputies went to the home after they were asked to conduct a welfare check on the man. When they arrived at the home, they found him dead.  

Hanson was last seen alive on Saturday, September 24. Officials did not say why his death has been deemed "suspicious."

The cause of Hanson's death is pending an autopsy and no motive has been determined at this time.
