BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - An employee at a Baton Rouge school is facing a charge for allegedly beating a student Monday, according to officials.
The Baton Rouge Police Department reported Antoine Weatherspoon, 25, was arrested on a charge of cruelty to juveniles. At the time of his arrest, Weatherspoon was an employee at Baton Rouge Charter Academy at Mid City.
According to the probable cause report, officers were called to Our Lady of the Lake Hospital to investigate the beating of a 13-year-old boy.
The report stated the boy said he was taken to the time out room at school earlier that day and an employee tried to whip him with a belt. The boy said the school employee got mad when he blocked some of the lashes and started punching him in the arm.
Investigators reported the boy had cuts and bruises on his arms and legs.
"The safety and security of students is our number one priority," said Colleen Reynolds, spokeswoman for BR Charter at Mid City. "If allegation is brought forth that affects students negatively, we investigate thoroughly and respond accordingly. We will take appropriate actions in this matter as we investigate."
Police said two witnesses were questioned Tuesday and claimed they saw Weatherspoon hit the teen.
Weatherspoon was arrested late Tuesday night. Bond information was not available.
School officials have not said whether he has been fired.
