BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - He deserves a ticker tape parade, but that's not the way these things end in the football coaching profession. So, let's remember this celebration last year for LSU head football coach Les Miles when he was carried off the field at the end of the season after his team defeated Texas A&M.
His official bio on the university's website calls it one of the most magnificent moments in Tiger Stadium history, which is a little odd since the reason it was magnificent was because everybody thought they were going to fire him. Les Miles was the players' coach; his fans here in town saved his job for a bit; and the news media loved him.
But most of all, he was the players' coach. Miles truly cared for his players as people, and he lifted them and their families up on many, many occasions. It may have been time for a change, but that doesn't mean we won't miss Les Miles. And don't be surprised if we don't see that wink in his eye again, standing on the other sideline, coaching another winning football program.
