BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - A man was arrested after he crashed his vehicle into a pole. Deputies say he had an unrestrained toddler in the backseat of the car.
According to the probable cause report submitted by the East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff's Office, the crash happened shortly after midnight on Tuesday, Sept. 20. The report claims that Devante Petties, 20, first crashed into a vehicle while driving on Greenwell.
"The passenger stated that [Petties] hit the vehicle, he fled the scene and was speeding down Denova Street," notes the deputy in the report. "The passenger stated that [Petties] then lost control of the vehicle and ran into a telephone pole."
The second crash happened less than 300 yards from the first.
"The passenger stated that [Petties] then exited the vehicle and ran off," the report continued.
The deputy was able to locate Petties and learned that he didn't have a driver's license.
Petties was arrested and charged with speeding, reckless operation of a vehicle, hit and run, no driver's license, negligent injuring, and no child restraints. He was booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison.
According to court records, Petties has a prior criminal history that includes convictions for aggravated battery, aggravated criminal damage to property, and simple battery.
